Not much, not much. We are less than a week away. It is on Friday, the draft. I love it. I'll be up there. Mark will be up there. Uh, it's going to be so much fun. I'm going to be going up to upstate New York this summer, like I've been up in upstate New York for the whole year. So it's been it's great. No, but I can't wait. This is gonna be super awesome. It's my first draft I've ever attended. Mark, I don't know what draft this is for you, but it'll be the most fun because I'll be there.

Well, the last one I went to was in Nashville when the Flyers drafted Mitch Matt Bay Mitch Cobb. I was there live. Our beloved Flyers drafted him. I was so excited. Um, yeah, you know what? It's gonna be a good time, and uh, I think there's gonna be a lot of action. I think there's gonna be a lot of action at this draft. It's already it's already started. There's been so much action. We just had the Brady Kachuk trade that happened, and whoa, and and yeah, a lot of lot of a lot of I think there's gonna be a few. What's the uh I had someone ask me on Twitter what's the uh overunder on trades at the draft?

I think it'll be first of all, let's let's first quickly apologize to the puck bunker boys uh for the loss of Brady Kachuk. I think they're probably that look, I knowing them, they're probably in like uh good riddance to that guy. But I look, I think they got a really good haul. Plus, you're getting pick nine. There's talks about so many people going there. Look, that was gonna be a dangerous spot for Florida to pick, but look, they're back in it. Look, that guy, Bill Zito, say what you will about the Florida Panthers, but that's one of the best GMs in hockey. Oh, for sure. Let's skip back to talking about the trades, though. I think this is gonna be a draft where you're gonna see a lot of trade-ups, but coincidentally, you're gonna see a lot of teams trying to trade down because this is a deep draft, and if you can move back and collect a lot of picks, that's pretty that's pretty solid, honestly. I I I would try to do that as much as I could if I especially the blues. San Jose did that, the blues might do that. Yeah, you never got three picks. It's yeah, they got three picks. I I think two of those.

Let's do it. Okay, um, but today's episode. Are we are we ready to talk about today's episode or should we stop gushing about the uh draft here? Okay, so today's episode, we're gonna do a best of top three characteristics like skating, shooting, passing, all that stuff. We're gonna we're gonna do we're gonna talk about the top prospects, we're gonna bounce some names back and forth between Link and I, and uh yeah, figure out uh who the best in class is. So uh let's uh let's and Link made a nice, beautiful little spreadsheet here.

He's got the you you even made a fancy, you got gold, silver, and bronze. Wow, Link. Four years university really paid off, eh?

That's that, yeah, yeah. Man, that's what that uh that's what that business degree gets you. You can you can maneuver some spreadsheets and whatnot, but yeah, we'll be talking about the top three in each kind of big characteristic that we like to highlight. Um, and yeah, there's only five right now because we're kind of having IQ play a bit of a part into each one. Plus, can you tangibly say who has the best IQ in the draft? I maybe can with Vigo, maybe I don't know.

Oh Vigo, I think we're gonna hear Vigo's name a lot. All right, let's go. Yeah, first characteristic we are gonna discuss are the skaters. Now, a lot of good skaters in this draft. How are we gonna rate this in terms of straight line speed, the four-way mobility, the acceleration, explosiveness? Like, are we just gonna do like an overall kind of overall overall? We have to. If we said skaters, we didn't specify. So, okay.

I mean, it would be pretty tough for me to kind of just be like uh straight line speed, because then I'd be like, All right, sweet. It's Math is pressed. I'm gonna know like it's there's a lot of dynamics that go into this. Obviously, there's some pretty good skaters in this draft. I don't think there's one particular burner, like there have been in years past. Like last year, we had Matthew Schaefer, who was phenomenal. We had James Haggins, who was the best skater.

There was been a few burners in the middle.

Don't even start on Oliver Moore, but I think we got a few couple of good guys this year. But this is look, it's been a defense-heavy draft, and I will submit my first kind of person for uh in contention or first of first overall. I'll say the best skater in the draft, in my opinion, is Chase Reed. I think that he is phenomenal in straight line, uh, going back going backwards, for a mobility is phenomenal. I think for me, that's what makes him, in my opinion, the the best defenseman in this draft class. And that's that's kind of where I've been leaning with this with this pick. But there are a couple of a couple of ways we can go with this.

Yeah, you know what? I he he's I'm having I'm having a hard time. So see for me, it's uh Tommy Blyle. Tommy Blyle is just so smooth, like he just looks like he's floating on the ice and it's effortless. Like when he he goes top speed, it's like in two seconds, and he just like just sneaks through the uh neutral zone, and it doesn't even look like he's trying. And then next thing you know, he's got a breakaway as a defenseman. And I mean, listen, Chase Reed. I've watched him live, and yeah, he's another one where I've texted you and I said, Oh my god, Chase Reed, what a guy! So this is a tough one. I mean, okay, let's okay. So we got I got my pick, you got your pick. Let's add some other players to the list. Uh, who else do you like in this category?

Well, obviously, I think no, no skating complaint, uh, no skating conversation is complete without talking about I think the strongest skater in the draft in terms of just the amount of power he gets from his stride, and that's Albert Smeets. Yeah, uh, this dude crushes in a straight line. Uh, he's a pretty he's gotten way more mobile in every single direction as well. Um, I saw it a little bit. He was looking better than he did on tape when I saw him in person at the World Juniors, and then when he moved, when he was at the second part of the season, his skating was still very good, just the offensive production was really lacking uh from the first part of the season. He's a great skater, phenomenal, even. I think he's a guy who I've consent consistently said I think he's a guy who's gonna maybe have a really good shot at playing in the NHL next year, and skating is one of the biggest reasons why. Uh, I also throw out two more names. I know I'm we're really only saying defensemen here, but the only the other two names that I have in contention that may not make it into my top three because you said Blyle already. Carson Carls just because of how uh again powerful and balanced he is on the skates, and then also Ben McBeath. I'll throw that out there from the dub. Dude is a burner, burner right there. He's gonna be going to Denver, so he may be the fastest skater on that team. Unbelievable.

What about uh Villeneuve?

Oh, of course. Villeneuve is phenomenal in everything, single direction. He's pretty quick as well. Man, this is a tough one from the jump.

Well, we've got some forwards. I will say, uh, I have Cullen on my short list of the guys.

Preston was up there. Yeah, um, I another we've got another defense, and I said Malte Gussen is also another confidence game.

I I'll say that I I think so too, just because he's so effortless, like he doesn't even look like he's trying, and he's flying out there. So let's go Blyal number one, and then we're gonna have to go Chase Reed number two. Okay, and oh probably Schmitz as uh number three, right? I think we you and I both agree on all these, I think.

All right, let's go. So listen, I I know I know that you might not agree with me, but I'm gonna go with Keaton Verhoff's gotta be a top uh one of the tops. Yeah, yeah, the kids got to see. No, I've seen him in person.

What's that? Uh Mark, I've seen him in person. I'm gonna agree with you. I saw him, I saw I saw a patented Keaton Verhoff blasted Clarkson earlier in the year. It was the only goal goal he scored in that series. And then I saw I saw his shot on display at the World Juniors. It wasn't obviously as strong um as you know, I think, but I think there are a couple other guys in contention, but he's definitely he's definitely in the top three. I'll say that. I think there's a couple other people in contention. Um I'll throw up a name. I'll throw up a name. Ethan Belchez is the guy that I've I've always really thought that he is, he's got a bomb. Um, though, though he's fallen on our draft boards, Ryan Rubrik still possesses quite the great shot.

Yes. Uh, another names that I would definitely consider Caleb Malhotra. Uh Elton Hermanson is another one.

Yeah. I and now I won't say him and because this next name I won't say because of power. I'll purely just say because of I think of ability. I don't think there's a better player in this draft who at freezing the goaltender and freezing the opposition than JP Herlbert. But uh, I don't know if he'll finish. I just want to give him a little bit of a shot though.

Yeah, look, we'll see. Oh, any other name that I that I didn't mention that you want to throw up in there?

Oh, you know what? Listen, I uh you probably you saw him at the World Juniors too, Thomas Franko.

Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Tommy Tranko. Look, it's an undervalued trait to be able to shoot from every direction and off balance. And that's what Tranko can do. It's a really solid trait. Then it's I think it's going to take him to the NHL.

Okay, so let's let's whittle this down now. We got to go top three. So I I think we both agreed on Vierhoff and Rubruk, I say are the top two. So who do you want to put Numero Unski?

Numero Unsky. Uh, let's go with Verhoff. Honestly, I I'll I'll chime in with you on that point. I think look, he for someone who who has balance issues on his skates, he consistently gets that power behind uh him right now if he gets that balance. I mean, not if when he gets that balance, because he's gonna be getting strength training at North Dakota. This guy is going to fix his skating. Uh, he's not gonna be a phenomenal skater, but he's still gonna be a very competent skater. Just wait, look out. I really believe in Verhoff. Um, I you guys might be shocked with how high I have him uh into this board, but uh I yeah, I let's let's let's let's let's go.

I'll I'll have to we got we got Verhoff number one, and now I guess it would be between you want to do like you I said uh well we both said Rubruk and Belchez. Um and do you think that there's anyone else that can contend with them? Like Malholtra. I think you said Malholtra. Malbert Herlbert.

No, Mal Herlbert might not be in there. Uh Hermanson's also on the periphery. I might just lean with I might lean with I think one of the th one of the traits that has to deal with with shooters as well, because we are talking about pure shot, but one of the things we don't talk about is ability to get to the net. That's something that Juju Stenka Barneau was very good at as well. I think that will give for me, will give Belchez the edge over Brubrick. So if that if you want to go two and three, that works.

The big cheese, we gotta go with the big cheese. Three, two and three. The top shooters, Keaton Veraff, number one, Ethan Belchez, number two, and Ryan Brubrick number three. All right, so then I guess we're going passers next. Playmakers, yeah, just like a kind of like playmakers, hockey IQ, passers. We can put them all in the put them in that category. I was simple, I think. Pretty simple number one.

Yeah, pretty simple number one. I actually think that it's a pretty simple one, two, three for me. I have them very defined in my in my head. I think this is a year that is full of playmakers on the wing. And number one, obviously, isn't Gavin McKenna. Number two is also pretty obvious for me. Uh, it's the center from Victoriaville from Russia as well. Uh Igor Shilov. And then number three, I have Vigo Bjork. That's my three. I I want to hear if you have if you are convinced by mine or if you have someone else you want to throw in there.

Well, I got uh I got I I was gonna put Tommy Blon there. He got 60, he led the Q in passes and assists, 63 points, uh 63 points, 63 assists. Um, I I'm not saying that uh that that is a one. What about uh Marcus Ruck is another one that had a crazy amount of assists? What did he get 81 assists or something like that?

Yeah, the only reason why he hit 100 is because he had like 80-something assists. It was crazy.

Yeah, so I mean, yeah, we gotta we gotta that's a that's a tough one, but uh listen, I I was gonna McKenna number one, she loved number two. I'm totally down with that. Let's figure out number three. That's the one I think that we're gonna have a little bit of difficulty. You you think Vigo Bjork over someone like Ruck or even Tommy Blau who put up astronomical assist numbers this year?

I'm I'm willing to I'm willing to hear you out for those guys for sure, but I don't want to rule out Vigo Bjork as uh as a playmaker as well. No, no, I listen, I'm not saying the way that he yeah, I love V V Vigo Bjork. The way that he saw the ice just at the world juniors and everything else, that I think phenomenal vision. I I really believe, and even in transition, too. I think if this is this is a player who played in the J20 again, and thank god he didn't, because I think he would have put up like a billion points. He I think he would have gone nuclear on the assist side.

Um, he puts he puts the puck into soft ice too, like soft areas. He does that really well where he just kind of he just lets it go and and the player ends up on his stick. Yeah, I'll look at what we I love eagle bjork, you love Eagle Bjork. We're gonna go by default, Bigobjork number three.

This is if it feels wrong not to put Evar Stenberg at two or three because he's legitimately he he's phenomenal, he's really good, but there's a couple of guys that but there's there's some guys that got like the filthy myths that like so you like Wide Cullen is one.

Why Egart Shiloff is another one, uh Villeneuve because of his skating. Villeneuve, like he's slippery.

Okay, we're talking over each other. I don't even know which way to go. Look, people, people, people are gonna look at me and be like, You're so biased if when I say I want to put Cullen there. I don't know who else. Cullen has to be there. I I think I think two two Stenberg, three Cullen, honestly, is just it's have to, I have to do it. I that's where I land.

Is there is there anyone else you really want to fight for on this or no?

No, I mean, you know what? I it's those are all pretty they're all pretty close, you know what I mean? It's just personal preference, I think, at this point. Like there's no one that kind of stands out head and shoulders above anyone else. So I I think we can we can agree on anything. And you could put any of those guys in there, and I don't think people would complain. That's a pretty tight list right there.

You know what? And like, like yeah, what Cullen, especially at the U18s, I think that's where I I noticed I I saw him when he was at when they did the uh USA prospect game, the uh all-american prospect game, he was looking real good. I was like, oh my god, where did he come from? And then he just kind of got better and better, and then U18s he popped off. Uh but McKenna, I mean, the way he slows the play down and he just he evades that pressure really well, and and he's got you know the dangle, the the the stick, the uh carrot on a stick, as they say. You know, magic see me now you don't, that kind of stuff. Uh I it's who didn't you like I I I gushed about um Nikita Klepov about that. I called him, I I said the uh I made a whole bunch of Talladega Knights references. I was like, he's the magic man, now you see me, now you don't. The uh oh my god, you know, the shake and bake. You like Talladega Nights is a great reference point for hockey players that got uh got stick handling skills. So all right, so we got our top three. It's in it's on the books there, link.

Hemming because he is the the number of times that he hits and the aggressiveness in the way he hits, he's gotta go number one. I agree with you. He's gotta go one.

This is this is where it gets interesting. Like I said, we got you know, you got Albert Schmitz, you got Carson Carl, you got uh Maxim Sokolovsky. I mean, yeah. Where do we go from here?

I I I think I think I might just go with the two defensemen of Sokolovsky and s and Carl uh and Carl's and leave the two and leave the order to you because I just feel like Sokolovsky just with the violence that he does it with, and then Carls with just the efficiency of the the thing that that Carlson Carl does that Albert Smith doesn't, and the reason why I have uh Carls above Smeets wholesales because Carl's does it in such a clean and efficient way and then just gets skating again, where Albert Smith just loves to just run into guys and he just yeah not saying that's wrong, but Smith's is a little bit reckless where he kind of doesn't do it as efficiently as Carl's does, I would say. And that's kind of where I'm leaning for.

Are we gonna go? So if you want to go like complete menace, I would go Solovsky too. If you were to go with like amount uh and the way that he hits, I'd go Carl's two. So I mean, are we going we're gonna go with like those highlight hits, Sokolovsky's number two, and then Carl's three.

I think I think if we I think we gotta go with Sokolovsky two, okay. Just because of how complete of a guy he is. Fair. And then Carl's three.

I mean, there's so many different characteristics you can go through, but uh maybe we'll uh maybe we'll do some more uh at the draft.
